Carmilla and seven other Karnstein vampires 'sleep' in the eight vaults that make up the Karnstein crypt. Each vault is numbered, with the even numbers 0 to 6 on the north side of the crypt and the odd numbers 1 to 7 on the south side, as shown in the illustration below.

Some of the Karnsteins are buried in their shrouds, some in their finery, and some in both. From the clues below, can you determine each Karnstein's vault and the dress in which they were buried?

1. Among all the Karnsteins, there are as many buried in their shrouds as in their finery.

2. Lucas Karnstein lies next to and east of Amadeus Karnstein and directly across from a Karnstein that was not buried in his/her shroud.

3. Bertold Karnstein, who was not buried in his finery, sleeps in vault #3.

4. Ilsa Karnstein, who was buried in both her finery and her shroud, sleeps in a corner vault diagonally opposite to Paulina's corner vault. Paulina was buried in her finery.

5. Two Karnsteins that were not buried in their shrouds sleep in diagonally opposite corners.

6. Ilsa Karnstein is further from Amadeus Karnstein than from Lucas Karnstein.

7. Erzebet Karnstein sleeps on the south side of the crypt, but not in #5 and not directly opposite to Paulina Karnstein.

8. Radu Karnstein sleeps in a corner vault.




Bertold sleeps in vault #3 (clue 3). Ilsa and Paulina (clue 4), Erzebet (clue 7) and Radu (clue 8) sleep in the four corner vaults. By clue 2, Lucas must sleep in vault #4 and Amadeus in vault #2, since there is no room for two more vampires on the southern side. By elimination, Carmilla sleeps in vault #5.

By clue 6, Ilsa sleeps in either vault #6 or #7. If Ilsa sleeps in #7, Paulina would sleep in vault #0 (clue 4). Erzebet would then sleep in #1 (clue 7), directly across from Paulina. This, however, contradicts the second part of clue 7. Therefore, Ilsa must sleep in vault #6 and Paulina in vault #1. The vampire in vault #7 is Erzebet (clue 7) and, by elimination, the last vault, #0, is occupied by Radu.

Bertold was buried in his shroud (clue 3). By clue 4, Ilsa was buried in both her finery and her shroud; Erzebet and Radu were buried only in their finery (clue 5). By clue 2, Carmilla was buried only in her finery. Paulina wears a shroud (clue 4). By clue 1, Lucas and Amadeus each were buried only in shrouds and Paulina must also be wearing her finery under her shroud.
